Featured Cancer Survivor: Addison A.

Addison was diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2015, one month before her 9th birthday. She celebrated that birthday in the hospital, in isolation, at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock. For the rest of that year, she underwent chemo through a port in her chest, in her spinal fluid, and in her brain through lumbar punctures, sometimes bi-weekly, as well as orally. She received blood transfusions, platelets, cryoprecipitate (a blood component), IV antibiotics and pain management medication, MRIs, scans, tests, and IV nutrition (TPN) due to being so sick that she couldn't eat for weeks. My Dear America, On this post-election reaction Wednesday, I learned a few things. I learned that we as human beings hold onto pain, bitterness, anger, even hatred in the face of disappointment. I learned that we as Americans are spoiled and we expect things to go our way; and when things don't go our way, we have a hard time accepting that. Featured Cancer Survivor: Steven M.

While deployed in Afghanistan with the U.S. Air Force, Steven was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He was immediately flown to Germany to have the mass removed and sent back home to recover. After about a month, the cancer had already spread to his lymph nodes for which Steven was advised to undergo chemotherapy. After 9 weeks of chemo, Steven was deemed cancer free! 3 years later, Steven has a wife, 2 children and a wonderful life with many blessings.
